What to expect?
Getting new concrete laid might seem complex, but we break it down into clear, manageable steps. If you have decided on an Exposed Aggregate / Honed concrete, there will be additional steps involved. Here’s what you can expect when you choose us for your concreting project:
Before Pour.

Phase 1 (Excavation & Site Prep)
We start by excavating the area, removing any unwanted dirt, and then bringing in a solid layer of road base (rubble) to create a strong foundation.
(Don't worry, we'll work with you to ensure there's still access for foot traffic and vehicles where possible).

Phase 2 (Mesh & Formwork)
After the base is set, steel mesh is laid, and formwork is constructed to create the mold for the concrete.

(While you can walk on the mesh with caution, it is best to avoid it. All vehicle traffic is strictly prohibited on the prepared area at this stage).
During Pour.

Phase 3 (Concrete Pour)
Typically occurring a day or two after the mesh and formwork are complete, the concrete is poured.

(It is crucial that no one walks on the fresh concrete. Our team will discuss and arrange access points with you on-site).

The time it takes for the concrete to cure is influenced by weather conditions. Warmer weather generally leads to faster curing, while colder temperatures can slow the process down.

Curing times for grey smudge concrete
-
General foot traffic: 3 - 5 days
-
Vehicles: 7 days minimum
Curing times for exposed aggregate concrete
-
Once sealing is complete (please see phases 4 - 7)
After Pour.

Phase 4 (Wash Off - Exposed Aggregate Only)
The surface layer of cement is washed off on the same day as the pour or the following day. This process reveals the decorative aggregate underneath.

Phase 5 (Cutting Control Joints - Exposed Aggregate Only)
Control joints are cut into the concrete typically 24 to 48 hours after the pour

Phase 6 (Acid Wash - Exposed Aggregate Only)
An acid wash is typically performed 24 to 48 hours after the pour to further clean the surface and enhance the appearance of the aggregate.

Phase 7 (Sealing and Completion)
Depending on dry weather we will apply a concrete sealer to your concrete.
(Once dry to the touch is when you can walk and drive on your concrete).
